About VICBCA

The Victorian Barristers’ Clerks Association, VICBCA, represents the interests of the licensed barristers’ clerks who manage the thirteen clerking Lists at the Victorian Bar, and supports their continuing education and professional growth. Established in 2024, it is based at 205 William Street, Melbourne.

What the association does

VICBCA exists to represent the interests of barristers’ clerks in Victoria and to assist with their continuing education and professional growth, in the same way as its counterpart the New South Wales Barristers’ Clerks Association.

Every member of VICBCA is a barristers’ clerk: the licensed agent through whom solicitors brief the barristers on a List, and who manages those barristers’ diaries, fees and accounts. The clerking system is a long-established part of life at the Victorian Bar, and one the Bar describes as an important means of reducing barriers to entry to the profession. Read more about what a clerk does.

Licensed by the Bar Council

Since 1 July 2020, every barristers’ clerk operating in Victoria has held a licence issued by the Bar Council under the Clerking Regulations 2020. The licence requires a clerk to be a fit and proper person, financially viable and able to provide adequate services, to operate an independently audited clearing account for barristers’ money, and to attest to compliance every year.
